Facility improvements coming to the Lincoln Center

The Downers Grove Park District has a series of capital improvement projects planned for the Lincoln Center in 2017. Previously the home to the Lincoln School from 1867 to 1974, the historic building now serves as the District’s community center and offers the District’s Lincoln Learning Center Preschool, cultural and performing arts programs and adult programming. In the coming months, the six-level, multi-use building located at 935 Maple Ave. will receive a new HVAC system and elevator renovations to replace aging equipment.

From July 3 to 7, the Lincoln Center will be closed to the public for the installation of six new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units to replace existing 20-year-old units. The new high-efficiency HVAC units will be installed on the roof of the facility with a crane lift. New digital building control systems will allow for better monitoring of temperatures within the building and will provide greater control of the HVAC system.

Current program participants will be contacted regarding any program changes due to the facility closure. Adventure Camp for grades K-2 will join the older campers at Hummer Park located at 4833 Fairview Ave. Teen Trekkers will continue to run as scheduled at the Recreation Center located at 4500 Belmont Road. All other programs will be prorated for the week or rescheduled.

Coming this winter, the Lincoln Center will receive an elevator renovation to include a new state-of-the-art control system, cosmetic upgrades and increased elevator speed through new hydraulic pumps and motors. The existing elevator, installed in 1976, contains original parts that are no longer available for replacement. The elevator renovation is necessary to continue providing complete wheelchair accessibility to the historic facility. The renovation is scheduled to begin on December 18 and will require the elevator to be out of service for 3 to 4 weeks. During the closure, accommodations will be made for specific programs.
