As I conclude my first full year as the State Representative for the 81st District, I want to take this opportunity to provide an update on the accomplishments and challenges of the last session. I also must thank my constituents for entrusting me to be their voice in Springfield. It is a distinct privilege to serve in this role, and it is a responsibility I take very seriously.

When I was sworn into office last July, I pledged to come to Springfield and work in a bipartisan manner to tackle our State’s most pressing problems. While bipartisanship has been elusive on the larger issues, this year I was able to obtain wide bipartisan support on several of my own bills that save taxpayers money and help Illinois families.
I came to Springfield during a pivotal time in our State’s history. After 12 years of one-party rule, 2 ½ years ago Illinoisans elected a Democratic-controlled state legislature and a Republican Governor. This signaled desire for shared decision-making and compromise. We continue to experience the growing pains associated with that transition. Any legislation – including a budget – must be palatable by members of both parties, and we have found some areas where compromise has been achieved, such as criminal justice reforms. Yet a budget agreement has remained elusive. As our State continues without a budget, there are many rank and file lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who are committed to reaching agreement on a compromise to end this impasse. We know the road back to prosperity and stability will be long and difficult, but we are willing to meet in the middle to move our State forward.
