South High’s Drama department presents their Winter Play, Robin Hood by Larry Blamire, on December 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. The production will take place in the auditorium at South High (1436 Norfolk Street, Downers Grove).
“Our cast has been challenged with this exciting version of a classic story,” English/Fine Arts teacher and play director, Nathaniel Haywood said. “The students look forward to sharing their talents with our school and our community.”
Tickets are $10 for General Admission, $5 for Senior Citizens, and free for D99 High school students with their school ID. Tickets can be purchased in the South High Activities office (Room C149) or at the door at the event.
Playwright Larry Blamire has synthesized the conflicting legends and ballads about the outlaw folk hero Robin Hood into a hysterical, sprawling, action-packed drama. He has created roles that challenge and reinvent the myth as he ably retells the tale. This includes a wise-cracking, superior swordsperson in Marian and a Robin who only by chance finds himself a hero. True to the legend, of course, the play will leave the audience asking: Will the Sheriff’s sleazy scheme to steal and wed young Ellen fizzle? Will King John’s vicious taxes be rescinded? Will the Sherwood Foresters finally be legitimized? Will everyone wear tights? This play offers a strong dose of humor, a plethora of combat and sword fights, and a strong message about what we’re willing to do for our fellow man.
