Woodridge, IL–Perma-Seal recently donated over 50 tomato planting kits assembled by their tribe members to West Suburban Community Pantry in recognition of National Nutrition Month. The kits included a small clay pot, planting soil, and tomato seeds, as well as instructions for planting and care. The Pantry offered a planting demonstration via zoom as a follow up.
“Food insecurity shows up in a myriad of ways. Being able to grow healthy, nutritious food is good for the body and the soul. If our little project inspires someone to grow some of their own food, then it’s a win for all. ” said Laura Ann Spencer, Executive Vice President of Perma-Seal. “As a company, our purpose is to make the world a better place. The members of our Tribe find meaning and purpose in projects like this, where we can serve those in need in the communities we serve.”
Other Nutrition Month activities provided by the Pantry included a cooking demonstration and a class on how nutrition affects both physical and mental health, provided to customers of the Pantry from throughout DuPage and part of Will County. “Nutrition Education is part of the Supportive Services programming, with strong ties to our food pantry services, where we try to provide healthy choices, some ethnic offerings and plenty of fresh produce, meat, fish, milk and eggs,” says Kristin Jachymiak, Director of Supportive Services. “We also offer recipes and create displays that highlight healthy eating.”
West Suburban Community Pantry serves residents in need in Woodridge, Naperville, Lisle and all of DuPage Country as well as Bolingbrook and Romeoville through the Pantry Store in Woodridge, online shopping through the Virtual Food Pantry and with deliveries to seniors. The Pantry welcomes donations of unopened food, cleaning supplies, pet food, personal care items, diapers and baby wipes as well as monetary gifts. Additional volunteers are welcome for training.
